Kennedy – King College Information Commons Building

Project Description

The City Colleges of Chicago and the Public Building Commission built a replacement campus consisting of six buildings totaling 500,000 square feet. The Hill Group was the HVAC contractor for three of the new buildings plus the Central Heating and Refrigeration Plant as well as the underground mechanical utilities. The three buildings are: a multi-purpose building including the Culinary School, theater and radio/TV station; Applied Science Building including an auto technology lab and classrooms; and the Student Services/Community Services Building with gymnasium, natatorium and food services.

The Central Heating and Refrigeration Plant is located in the Student/Community Services Building and includes 2,100 tons in water chillers, heating hot water boilers totaling 1,000 boiler horsepower, heat transfer systems and ancillary work associated with the emergency power systems. Chilled and hot water are distributed to the campus building thru insulated pipes inside a conduit. Located in most of the buildings are tertiary pumping and distribution systems.

Building airside systems include indoor and custom roof mounted units operating as constant volume low pressure air handlers, makeup air units and heat recovery units. Conditioned air is distributed throughout each building. Zoned comfort is achieved thru 180 horizontal fan coil units.
