John G. Shedd Aquarium

Project Description

The Hill Group was the HVAC and Process Piping Contractor for the renovations and addition to this landmark facility. There were eight separate privately funded projects that comprised the work:

  • Office Addition / Food Service Renovations frees up approximately 20,000 square feet for future Oceanarium exhibits. The mechanical system has three packaged roof mounted air conditioning units supplying fan powered and standard VAV boxes. Flat oval double wall ductwork runs exposed in the corridor. The new office space is LEED silver certified.
  • The Polar Play Zone, Sea Otters, Sea Lions Exhibit & South River Exhibit Expansion and Mammal Habitats have separate life support systems that were renovated. The work included new: salt water pumps, filters, heat exchangers, UV sterilizers, protein fractionators, tanks designed for salt water aquariums and PVC and FRP piping. A three chamber ozone tower was rebuilt.
  • Animal Encounters, Presentation Hall and Guest Services / Group Holding were renovations of existing spaces to provide an updated layout.
  • Oceanarium Maintenance – Sea Otters consisted of rebuilding two air handling units, replacing another six air handlers and replacing 92 36” round ceiling diffusers over a 3,000,000 gallon salt water tank.
