Project Description

The Hill Group completed several renovations at the Willy Wonka Candy Factory. Each Project required strict coordination with ongoing candy manufacturing and plant operating hours.

New Steam Coils

Existing steam coils and pipe connections were damaged by forklifts in existing candy storage area. Hill was selected as the design/build contractor to provide new steam coils and re-pipe the steam and condensate. Flex connections were added so that steam connections could handle light contact with fork trucks.

Explosion Relief

Twenty-two existing dust collectors were retrofitted with emergency explosion relief diffusers, and exhaust dust dampers. Each dust collector was cleaned before cutting rectangular openings. Explosion relief diffusers and dampers were installed within a two-day shutdown period to eliminate any down time for candy manufacturing.

F-Line Addition

The Hill Group was awarded the design/build contract for HVAC and process piping required for a new candy manufacturing line. Existing dust collectors, ductwork, piping, and an air handling unit had to be moved to accommodate relocated manufacturing line. New structural steel framing and a roof mounted packaged air conditioning unit were installed on the roof for added F-Line. All indoor work was required to be complete within a two-week shutdown period.

Washilator Boiler

Existing steam cleaning “washilator” utilized plant steam. During cleaning cycles plant steam pressure was decreased, causing ineffective candy manufacturing. The Hill team designed a 100KW electric steam boiler to handle wash cycles. New piping is cross connected with manual isolation valves so that plant steam can be used if electric boiler is in service.
